Team Overview

General
Singapore were perennial medal contenders in the early days of the Asian Games, with podium finishes at each of the first five events. They claimed silver at the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 as one of only two teams to compete, before winning their sole gold medal in 1954 in Manila. Further silver medals followed in 1958 and 1966, while the team won the most recent of their three bronze medals in 1986.

At the 2018 Games, Singapore lost all three of their group matches and were then beaten 28-6 by Japan in the quarterfinals. In the first classification round they sprung a comeback against Saudi Arabia, scoring four goals without reply in the final period to triumph 6-5. The fifth place game saw Singapore face a rematch with the Republic of Korea, who had beaten them 10-7 in the group stage. A closer game finished 8-8, with the Koreans taking fifth place after a penalty shoot-out.

The Singaporean team enjoyed unprecedented dominance of the South East Asian Games before 2019, winning 27 consecutive gold medals. However, their supremacy in the competition ended at the 2019 Games in the Philippines, where Indonesia defeated Singapore on their way to winning the round-robin competition. The Singaporeans had to settle for bronze. The team returned to the top of the podium at the 2023 Games in Cambodia.

As hosts of the 2023 Asian Water Polo Championships they were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage by Kazakhstan. Victories over the Philippines and Uzbekistan in the classification rounds meant they finished the tournament ranked fifth. They also lost to Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals at the 2022 edition of the tournament, going on to rank sixth.

The team's only Olympic Games participation in 1956 ended with Singapore winless and ranked last.
