Team Overview

General
Kazakhstan have won the most gold medals of any men's water polo team at the Asian Games, despite having only made their debut in 1994. They have dominated the competition since then, and claimed their sixth gold in seven appearances at the 2018 edition in Indonesia. The only blemish on their record came in 2006, when they lost to Japan in the semifinals and had to settle for bronze.

In 2018 in Indonesia the Kazakhstani team progressed from their group undefeated before dispatching the host nation in the quarterfinals. They then beat the People's Republic of China by a single goal in the semifinals, and went on to defeat Japan 8-7 in the final. Four years earlier at the 2014 Games in Incheon, they also overcame Japan by a single goal in the gold medal match.

Kazakhstan won bronze at the 2023 Asian Water Polo Championships, which was their second consecutive third-place finish at the tournament after they also claimed bronze in 2022. Only a penalty shoot-out defeat to the Islamic Republic of Iran stopped them from topping Group B at the 2023 tournament, before they eliminated hosts Singapore [10-7] in the quarterfinals. Their progress was stopped in the semifinals by eventual champions the People's Republic of China [10-1], but Kazakhstan recovered to overcome Thailand 18-7 in the bronze medal match.

Kazakhstan made their fourth Olympic appearance at the 2020 Games, but failed to post a victory in five group matches in Tokyo. Their highest ranking at the Olympic Games is ninth, achieved on their debut in Sydney in 2000. They competed at 11 editions of the world championships between 1994 and 2023, with 11th place representing their best finish in that period. At the 2023 tournament they ranked 14th for the third world championships in a row, with their only win a 12-5 defeat of Asian rivals the People's Republic of China in the classification round.
