Team Overview

General
The Republic of Korea reached the podium on their first two Asian Games appearances, but have not claimed a medal since. Their debut as the host nation of the 1986 Games in Seoul ended in a silver medal, with gold medallists the People's Republic of China the only team to deny them victory in a round-robin tournament. The Koreans won bronze four years later in 1990, and also contested the bronze medal match in 2010 and 2014, but lost on both occasions.

At the 2018 Games the Republic of Korea's only group stage win came against Singapore [10-7], and they were eliminated after a quarterfinal defeat to the People's Republic of China. In the classification rounds they posted a victory over hosts Indonesia, then faced a rematch with Singapore in the fifth place game. They eventually triumphed over the Singaporeans in a penalty shoot-out following an 8-8 draw.

The Koreans made their world championship debut in 2019 in Gwangju, where they won the 15th place game against New Zealand on penalties. They also made their Olympic Games debut as hosts in Seoul in 1988, which saw them rank 12th. This remains their only Olympic appearance.

The Republic of Korea were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage by the Chinese team at the 2022 Asian Water Polo Championships in Samut Prakan, Thailand. They then beat Hong Kong, China in their first classification match before dispatching Singapore to secure a final ranking of fifth.
