Team Overview

General
India won bronze at the inaugural Asian Games men's volleyball tournament in 1958. Four years later the team produced their best performance at the Games, winning six of their seven matches across two rounds - only losing to gold medallists Japan - and picking up the silver medal. They also won bronze in 1986 in Seoul.

At the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, group stage victories against Hong Kong, China [3-0] and Maldives [3-0] were enough to qualify the team for the first knockout round, where they were defeated 3-1 by Japan. They then suffered losses to Pakistan [3-1] and Myanmar [3-2] in the classification rounds to finish the tournament ranked 12th from 20 teams.

The Indian team ranked in the top four on their first three appearances at the Asian Cup. They placed third on debut in 2010, lost the third place play-off to Japan in 2012, and made it all the way to the final in 2014, where they lost 3-0 to the Republic of Korea. At the 2022 Asian Cup their only win came in the classification rounds against Hong Kong, China and they placed 10th from 11 teams. In 18 Asian championship appearances between 1979 and 2021, India's best performance came in 2005, when they lost the third place play-off to the Republic of Korea. The Indians have been the dominant team at the South Asian Games, winning all five gold medals on offer between 2004 and 2019.

India competed at the world championship in 1952 and 1956, but did not advance to the final round at either tournament.
