Team Overview

General
Malaysia have finished on the podium eight times at the Asian Games, but are yet to claim gold. The team have two silver medals to their name, from 2010 and 2018, alongside a further six bronze medals. They have only finished outside of the top four on three occasions.

They had to settle for silver in the 2018 final in Indonesia after a heartbreaking defeat to Japan. Having finished second behind Pakistan in their group, Malaysia won their semifinal against India in a penalty shoot-out. In the gold medal match against the Japanese, they were 5-2 ahead in the last period before Japan fought back to draw level at 6-6 with 13 seconds left on the clock. Malaysia were then denied gold in the shoot-out, losing 3-1.

At the 2023 World Cup, two 3-2 wins over Chile and New Zealand in Pool C sent Malaysia into a crossover round match against Spain. They then came agonisingly close to securing a quarterfinal berth, losing on a penalty shoot-out to the Spanish team after a 2-2 draw. The team's highest ranking at the World Cup was fourth at the 1975 edition, while the most recent of their nine Olympic Games appearances came in 2000.

Malaysia were runners-up at the Asia Cup in both 2017 and 2022 having never previously reached the final. They were defeated 2-1 by India at the 2017 edition of the tournament and lost by the same scoreline to the Republic of Korea in 2022. However, the Malaysians gained a measure of revenge over the Korean team at the 2022 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, where they triumphed 3-2 against the Koreans in the final to win their first Sultan Azlan Shah Cup title.

The Malaysian team also won gold at the 2023 South East Asian Games in Cambodia after a 3-0 victory against Singapore in the final.
