Team Overview

General
The DPR Korean women's volleyball team are taking part in the Asian Games for the first time since 2010. They have never won a medal at the Games but came close to the podium on all five of their previous appearances, finishing fourth in the round-robin competition in 1974, 1978, 1982, and 1990. They also placed fourth at the 2010 Games, following a defeat in the bronze medal match.

At Guangzhou 2010, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea finished second in Group B, with their only defeat of the preliminary round a 3-2 loss to Kazakhstan. They then overcame Thailand 3-2 in the quarterfinals, but were eliminated at the semifinal stage following a 3-0 defeat to eventual gold medallists the People's Republic of China. A rematch with Kazakhstan followed in the bronze medal match, which also ended in a 3-0 loss.

The DPR Korean team's best finish at the Asian championship is also fourth place, which they achieved in 1991. They most recently featured at the tournament in 2011.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea won bronze on their only appearance at the Olympic Games, when they defeated the Republic of Korea in the third place play-off in 1972 in Munich. They also have one third place finish to their name at the world championship [1970], but have not taken part in the tournament since 1986.
