Team Overview
General
Qatar are yet to win a medal at the Asian Games, but they came close in 2018. They progressed from the group stage in Indonesia without losing a single set in three matches, then eased past Myanmar with another 3-0 triumph in the first knockout round. They overcame a tough test in the quarterfinals against Japan, winning 3-2, but their progress was halted in the semifinals following a 3-0 defeat by a dominant Iranian team that went on to win gold. The Qataris were unable to finish the tournament on a high, as they lost the bronze medal match 3-1 to Chinese Taipei.
Having made their Asian Games debut in 1982 in New Delhi, the team did not appear again until 1998. They have featured at every Games since then. Prior to 2018 their best result had come as hosts of the 2006 Games, where they also finished fourth after a 3-2 bronze medal match defeat to Saudi Arabia.
Qatar also did not record a top-three finish at the Asian championship in 16 appearances from 1989 to 2021, but ranked among the top 10 teams at all four editions of the tournament between 2015 and 2021. A 3-2 defeat to the People's Republic of China meant they missed out on the semifinals in 2021, and they went on to rank fifth. Qatar took home the title in their only appearance at the Asian Cup, defeating the Islamic Republic of Iran 3-2 in the 2018 final. The team also qualified for the 2016 and 2022 editions of the Asian Cup, but later withdrew from both tournaments.
The Qatari team made their debut appearance at the world championship in 2022. They lost all three of their group stage matches to Japanese, Cuban, and Brazilian opposition, and ended the tournament ranked 21st from 24 teams. The team also competed at the 2022 Challenger Cup, losing their only match of the knockout tournament 3-1 to eventual runners-up Turkiye.
