Team Overview

General
The People's Republic of China are three-time Asian Games gold medallists, a record only surpassed by Japan, and their eight total medals is the third most of any team [behind the Republic of Korea and Japan]. They won a medal at each of their first seven appearances at the Games from 1974 to 1998. However, since they claimed gold in 1998 the Chinese team have finished on the podium only once, winning silver at the 2006 Games in Doha.

The Chinese team's best results have come at continental level. They claimed the 2022 Asian Cup title in Thailand with a 3-0 victory against Japan in the final, securing their second triumph at the competition after they were also victorious in 2012. In 2021 they finished third at the Asian championship, a tournament they won in 1979, 1997, and 1999.

The People's Republic of China lost all three of their pool matches at the 2022 World Championship. They did not qualify for the final round of the Nations League in their first three appearances between 2018 and 2022, and in the competition's predecessor, the World League, their highest finish was sixth in 1996.

They have made two appearances at the Olympic Games, competing in 1984 and 2008. As hosts at the 2008 Games in Beijing, the People's Republic of China were beaten by eventual silver medallists Brazil in the quarterfinals.
