Team Overview

General
India are competing at their third Asian Games at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou. The team made their debut in 1998, with their next appearance coming 16 years later in Incheon. Their 2014 campaign began with an emphatic 15-0 victory over Maldives, but they failed to progress from the group stage following 10-0 defeats to both the Republic of Korea and Thailand.

The Indian team saw early success at the Asian Cup. They finished as runners-up on debut as hosts of the 1980 tournament, losing the final 2-1 to the People's Republic of China. The team finished third in 1981 before returning to the final at the next edition in 1983, losing out 3-0 against hosts Thailand. In 2022 India returned to the Asian Cup as hosts following a 19-year absence from the tournament. After the team drew their opening game 0-0 with the Islamic Republic of Iran, they withdrew from the competition and their only result was declared null and void due to a number of COVID-19 cases in the squad.

India have dominated the South Asian Games in recent years, beating Nepal in all three gold medal matches between 2010 and 2019.
