Hong Kong, China competed in the inaugural Asian Games women's football tournament in 1990 in Beijing, then did not appear at the Games again for 24 years. They returned in 2014 in Incheon, where they lost 9-0 to Japan in the quarterfinals.

The team made their second consecutive Asian Games appearance in 2018 in Indonesia. They won only one of three group stage matches [defeating Tajikistan 6-1], but progressed to the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams. Their tournament ended with a 5-0 quarterfinal loss to the Republic of Korea.

Hong Kong, China participated at 14 editions of the Asian Cup between 1975 and 2003, but they have not featured at the tournament since then.
