Team Overview

General
Vietnam participated in each edition of the Asian Games football competition between 1954 and 1970, with a fourth-place finish in 1962 their best performance during that period. The team returned to the competition in 1998 and have taken part in every tournament since, although they are yet to win a medal.

The Vietnamese team came close to the podium at the 2018 Games, matching their previous best result from 1962. In Indonesia they topped their group with a 100% record and zero goals conceded, before successive 1-0 wins against Bahrain and the Syrian Arab Republic in the round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively, set up a semifinal against the Republic of Korea. Their defence was finally breached in a 3-1 defeat to the Korean team that went on to win gold. Vietnam ended their tournament with a loss in the bronze medal match to the United Arab Emirates on penalties.

The team finished as runners-up at the 2018 AFC U23 Championship. After defeating Iraq on penalties in the quarterfinals, they triumphed on penalties again in the semifinals over Qatar, and then took Uzbekistan to extra-time in the final. However, a 120th-minute goal for the Uzbekistani team broke Vietnamese hearts. At the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup, they exited in the quarterfinals following a 2-0 defeat to eventual champions Saudi Arabia.

Vietnam won a second consecutive gold medal at the South East Asian Games when they hosted the 2021 Games in Hanoi. They were unable to make it three-in-a-row at the 2023 Games in Cambodia after losing a thrilling semifinal 3-2 to eventual champions Indonesia, but they managed to secure bronze with a third place match victory over Myanmar.
