Afghanistan are making their fifth appearance in the Asian Games men's football tournament at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou.
The team lost both of their matches at the inaugural Asian Games football competition in 1951 and again posted two defeats from two matches at the 1954 Games in Manila. They then did not appear at the Asian Games for another 48 years.
The Afghan team fared no better upon their return to the tournament in 2002, losing all three of their group matches in Busan by at least a 10-goal margin. Their most recent appearance at the Games was at Incheon 2014, where they were defeated in each of their three group matches against Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, and Hong Kong, China.
Afghanistan's most significant results in recent history include a silver medal at the 2010 South Asian Games, where they won three matches out of three in the group stage and beat Maldives in the semifinals before losing the gold medal match to hosts Bangladesh, 4-0. The team have made one appearance at the Olympic Games, taking part in 1948 in London.
