Team Overview

General
India made their Asian Games debut in 1982 in New Delhi, where they failed to register a win and finished last out of five teams. They did not compete again until 2010 in Guangzhou but they are making their fourth consecutive Games appearance at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou, having participated at both Incheon 2014 and Indonesia 2018.

The Indian team's highest finish from their recent Asian Games appearances came at Incheon 2014, where they qualified directly for the final round but were eliminated by Japan. They went on to beat Mongolia in their first classification match, which was their first victory at the Asian Games, but then lost to Kazakhstan in the play-off for fifth place. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, the team lost all four of their group matches and were eventually ranked ninth.

India's women took part in 20 editions of the Asia Cup between 1970 and 2021, with a best finish of fifth in 2013. Competing in the second tier at the 2017 Asia Cup, the team defeated Kazakhstan in the final by two points to earn promotion back into the top division for the 2019 edition. They were ranked eighth at the Asia Cup in 2019 and 2021 after failing to win a match at either tournament.

India claimed gold at the 2019 South Asian Games with a 127-46 victory over Nepal in the final.
