He began taking the sport more seriously after he was reprimanded by his mother for playing online games when he was supposed to be training for the Philippine Youth Games. "I was a hyperactive kid and also hard-headed. I was 13 then, I was supposedly training for Batang Pinoy [the Philippine Youth Games] but I didn't feel like it." He went on to win a bronze medal at the tournament. "From then on, I thought to myself I would take taekwondo seriously." (sports, 03 Jun 2021)
