He began taking the sport more seriously after he was reprimanded by his mother for playing online games when he was supposed to be training for the Philippine Youth Games. "I was a hyperactive kid and also hard-headed. I was 13 then, I was supposedly training for Batang Pinoy [the Philippine Youth Games] but I didn't feel like it." He went on to win a bronze medal at the tournament. "From then on, I thought to myself I would take taekwondo seriously." (sports, 03 Jun 2021)

"When I was starting, I was taught to go for speed because I believe speed kills. But now I focus on defence more. I got to know when to move quickly and when to move slowly but surely." (sports, 03 Jun 2021)
