Team Overview

General
Japan are the reigning Asian Games champions in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay, following their gold medal at the 2018 Games in Indonesia. It was their seventh Asian Games gold medal in the event, putting them one ahead of their Chinese rivals for most golds at the Games, and was Japan's first title since 2006. All of their other gold medals came before the turn of the century, including three consecutively in the 1970s.

At Indonesia 2018, Japan recorded a slower time than the People's Republic of China in the heats, but secured gold one place ahead of their Chinese rivals in the final. The team also have six silver medals to their name, meaning they have finished either first or second at every Asian Games since 1970.

Japan's fourth-place finish as hosts of the 1964 Olympic Games remains their best Olympic result. They have made five Olympic appearances since then, most recently ranking 13th as hosts of the 2020 Games in Tokyo. They also placed 13th in home water at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka.

At the Asian championships, the Japanese team claimed back-to-back silver medals in 2012 and 2016.
