He was banned for four years between 2016 and 2020 after testing positive for a banned substance at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati, India. He was also stripped of the singles gold and team silver he had won at the Games. He appealed the World Anti-Doping Agency's [WADA] decision, and in 2017 his case was heard by the Court of Arbitration For Sport [CAS]. He claimed the substance had unintentionally entered his system through high quantities of meat he consumed prior to the competition, but his appeal was rejected by the CAS panel who upheld the four-year ban.
