His father Mohd Afendy Abdullah has served as the Malaysian national sailing team coach. His sisters Khairunneeta, Khairunhanna, and Khairunnisa have all represented Malaysia in sailing. His wife Nur Amirah won a silver medal in Laser Radial at the 2013 South East Asian Games in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. His father has worked as a national sailing coach in Malaysia and encouraged him to try the sport. "In the beginning, he was extremely strict as a coach. Even though I favoured swimming over sailing when I was a kid, my dad would push me towards sailing. I didn't develop a passion for sailing until I started participating and winning in competitions."
