Team Overview

General
The People's Republic of China have been ever-present on the podium at the Asian Games since making their debut in 1990, when they finished as runners-up to the Republic of Korea. The Chinese team have won gold three times, with their titles coming at consecutive Games in 2002, 2006, and as hosts in 2010. They claimed silver again in 2014 following a 1-0 loss to the Republic of Korea in the final, before earning bronze in 2018. Only the Republic of Korea have more gold medals [five] than the People's Republic of China, and the Koreans are tied with the Chinese team for most total medals at the Games [eight].

In Indonesia in 2018, the People's Republic of China finished level on points with Malaysia in the group stage but qualified for the semifinals on goal difference thanks to a 15-0 win over Hong Kong, China in their final group match. The Chinese team lost 1-0 to India in their semifinal, but bounced back with a 2-1 triumph over the Republic of Korea in the bronze medal match. It was the third time the Chinese team had claimed bronze at the Asian Games, following third-place finishes in 1994 and 1998.

In nine Asia Cup appearances since 1989, the People's Republic of China have never finished outside the top four. They won the title in 1989 and 2009, and were losing finalists in 1993 and 2017. At the 2022 edition they finished fourth following defeats to Japan in the semifinals and to India in the third place play-off.

The team have one Olympic medal to their name, a silver from the 2008 Games in Beijing. They have appeared at six Olympic Games and ranked ninth at both Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. At the World Cup, the Chinese team won one bronze medal [2002] in nine appearances from 1990 to 2022. They ranked ninth at the 2022 World Cup.
