Team Overview

General
India have won more medals than any other nation at the Asian Games with 15. The team last won gold in 2014, having also topped the podium in 1966 and 1998. They finished as runners-up to Pakistan in the inaugural tournament at the 1958 Games, which was played as a round-robin. With a change to the competition format, India then faced Pakistan in the next six gold medal matches but could only claim one win, 1-0 after extra time, in 1966. In total, they have won nine silver medals.

At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, the Indian team won their third bronze medal. They eased through their preliminary round pool, scoring 76 goals in five straight wins that included an 8-0 victory over eventual gold medallists Japan, but then lost 7-6 on penalties to Malaysia in the semifinals after a 2-2 draw. The Indians finished the tournament on a high though, ensuring their spot on the podium with a 2-1 win over Pakistan in the bronze medal match.

India are the most successful nation at the Olympic Games with eight gold medals, a record that includes six straight titles from 1928 to 1956. They last claimed gold at the 1980 Games in Moscow when they won a six-team tournament. They ended a 41-year wait for another medal with bronze at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. At the World Cup, India finished runners-up in 1973 before claiming the title two years later. They have not reached the final again in 12 appearances since, and placed ninth as hosts of the 2023 tournament.

India were runners-up at the first four editions of the Asia Cup between 1982 and 1994, but won back-to-back tournaments in 2003 and 2007. They secured their third Asia Cup title at the 2017 edition in Dhaka, before winning the third place play-off at the 2022 Asia Cup 1-0 against Japan. In 2022 they also claimed silver at the Commonwealth Games, before placing fourth in the 2022/23 Pro League.
