Team Overview

General
Vietnam have featured at every Asian Games since their debut in 1998. The closest they have come to winning a medal was at the 2014 Games, when they finished fourth after losing the bronze medal match to hosts the Republic of Korea.

In Indonesia in 2018, Vietnam began their group with a 3-2 win over Thailand, and despite a 7-0 defeat to Japan, they progressed to the knockout rounds. Their tournament ended with a penalty shoot-out loss to Chinese Taipei following a goalless quarterfinal.

Vietnam first appeared at the Asian Cup in 1999 and have participated in each tournament since. They played beyond the group stage for the first time in 2022, when the knockout bracket was expanded to include quarterfinals. The team collected one point in their group from a 2-2 draw with Myanmar and progressed on goal difference. They were defeated 3-1 in the quarterfinals by eventual champions the People's Republic of China, but went on to beat Thailand and Chinese Taipei in a play-off pool for World Cup qualification. Those victories secured a place at their first World Cup in 2023.

The Vietnamese team won gold at all three editions of the South East Asian Games between 2017 and 2022, defeating Thailand 1-0 in the gold medal match in both 2019 and 2022. They also won the 2019 AFF Championship with a 1-0 victory over Thailand in the final.
