Team Overview

General
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea's only gold medal at the Asian Games came in 1978, when a 0-0 draw with the Republic of Korea in the final resulted in both teams sharing the title. The DPR Korean team returned to the final in 1990, but were defeated by the Islamic Republic of Iran on penalties and had to settle for silver.

After exiting the tournament at the quarterfinal stage at all three editions of the Games between 2002 and 2010, the team made their third appearance in the final in 2014 in Incheon, where they faced hosts the Republic of Korea for gold. Their dreams of a second title were dashed in dramatic fashion, courtesy of a 121st-minute winning goal for the host nation. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, the team qualified in second place from a tight Group F to progress to the knockout phase. They defeated Bangladesh 3-1 in the round of 16 before exiting the competition at the quarterfinal stage, losing to the United Arab Emirates 5-3 on penalties.

The DPR Korean team have advanced from the group stage at the AFC U23 championship on one occasion, in 2016. They were eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing 2-1 to Qatar after extra time.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea's sole Olympic appearance came in 1976 in Montreal, where they lost 5-0 to Poland in the quarterfinals.
