WORLD CUP DISAPPOINTMENT
He expressed his disappointment at the Republic of Korea's performances at the 2023 World Cup. Defeat in their opening two games against Morocco and Colombia all but assured an early exit, which was confirmed after a 1-1 draw with Germany in their final match. "Perception of our team has changed in South Korea and also the world. But then you have the expectations, and the expectation when you come to a World Cup is obviously to perform at a top level, and unfortunately we've not been able to show that consistently. I know that the players are good enough but it has been very disappointing." (fifa, 01 Aug 2023)

FROM ENGLAND TO GERMANY
Having begun his playing career with Leicester City in England, he then moved to Germany and played for German clubs Hamm/Sieg and Mainz 05 in the 1980s. He started his coaching career in 1989 with TuS Koblenz, and had spells at various German clubs over the following 26 years before leaving Germany to coach Norwegian women's club team Avaldsnes IL in 2015. He returned to Germany in 2016 with SC Sand. "[In Germany] you've got an element of perfection and never wanting to give up, a pride, and an arrogance as well, but I mean that in a positive way – it's not a complacent kind of arrogance. And there's the expectation to win matches. So you're working off that template all the time."
