Team Overview

General
Japan have won bronze at three of the five editions of the Asian Games to feature women's team sabre. In 2002 they lost to the Republic of Korea in the semifinals before defeating Hong Kong, China in the bronze medal match, while at the 2006 Games the Koreans shared bronze with Hong Kong, China after losing in the semifinals to eventual champions, the People's Republic of China.

Japan did not win a medal at Guangzhou 2010 or Incheon 2014 but returned to the podium in 2018. Following a comfortable 45-22 quarterfinal victory over hosts Indonesia, they were beaten in the semifinals by eventual champions the Republic of Korea [45-25] and shared bronze with Kazakhstan.

In 2022 Japan won their first world championship medal, claiming bronze in Cairo, Egypt. They defeated Vietnam, Turkiye, and the United States of America on their way to a semifinal with France, which they lost 45-43. They recovered to win the third place play-off by the same score against Spain. The team were unable to build on that result at the 2023 World Championships, finishing ranked sixth.

The Japanese team made their Olympic debut as hosts of Tokyo 2020, where they lost in the quarterfinals to the ROC and finished ranked fifth.
