Team Overview

General
Japan have won seven medals in 11 Asian Games appearances, including gold in 1978 in Bangkok. They were runners-up at the inaugural men's team sabre tournament at Tehran 1974, and won bronze medals in 1986, 1990, 1994, 2006, and 2010. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, they lost to the People's Republic of China in the quarterfinals.

The Japanese men's sabre team competed at the Olympic Games for the first time at Tokyo 2020, where they qualified as hosts. There were nine teams in the tournament, which meant there was one round of 16 tie that pitted Japan against Egypt. The Egyptians won 45-32 and the Japanese finished the tournament ranked ninth.

The Japanese team have made 32 world championship appearances since 1969 but have struggled to make a significant impression at the tournament. They have finished inside the top 10 twice during that time, placing sixth on their debut in 1969 and seventh at the 2023 edition in Milan. Japan have seen more success at the Asian championships, winning five medals [three silver, two bronze] since 2003. They were ranked fourth at the 2023 edition of the tournament after losing the bronze medal match to the People's Republic of China.
