Her mother met Wu Guocun, a staff member working at the provincial diving sport centre of Guangdong, and Zhong Quansheng, then head coach of Zhanjiang Chikan Diving Team. She asked whether her daughter could try diving, but coach Zhong thought it was a bit late for her to start. She did not give up and asked Wu whether her daughter had a good physique for the sport. In 2023 she was elected as a representative for Zhongshan at the Guangdong Provincial People's Congress in the People's Republic of China. "It was people from Zhongshan city [government] that first contacted me and wanted to recommend me for the election. I consulted with coaches and team leaders from the diving team and they were very supportive. They encouraged me to take on more societal responsibility and to go outside of my comfort zone. This is very important for my self development. Being elected as a representative means that I have greater responsibilities and need to grow further. In the past, I focused more on diving and competitions for personal development. I never thought that I would be able to participate in public affairs. Whether it is a diver or a representative of the National People's Congress, I hope to contribute to the national sports cause." (sohu, 17 Jan 2023)
