His father Park Myung-Sun won a bronze medal for the Republic of Korea in the cycling road team event at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, People's Republic of China. He later became a cycling coach. (view, 19 Jan 2017; news, 22 Sep 2014)

He was carried off the velodrome on a stretcher during the omnium final at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after a heavy crash with British cyclist Mark Cavendish. He escaped the incident with only bruises and Cavendish, the silver medallist in the event, accepted responsibility for the crash.
