He was carried off the velodrome on a stretcher during the omnium final at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after a heavy crash with British cyclist Mark Cavendish. He escaped the incident with only bruises and Cavendish, the silver medallist in the event, accepted responsibility for the crash.
