Team Overview

General
The Philippines claimed gold at the first four Asian Games between 1951 and 1962. Their total of four titles is surpassed only by the People's Republic of China's eight. Their three other medals at the Games came in 1986 [bronze], 1990 [silver], and 1998 [bronze].

In Indonesia in 2018, the team began with a 96-59 win over Kazakhstan but lost their second group game 82-80 to eventual champions the People's Republic of China. Their quarterfinal against the Republic of Korea was closely contested until the last quarter, with the Koreans eventually prevailing 91-82. In the classification bracket, the Philippines posted a comfortable 113-80 win over Japan and thrashed the Syrian Arab Republic 109-55 - scoring 38 points in the first quarter - to finish fifth.

The Philippines also saw success in the early years of the Asia championship [now the Asia Cup], winning four titles and finishing as runners-up twice in the first seven editions of the tournament between 1960 and 1973. However, in their next 21 appearances from 1975 to 2022 they only managed one more title [1985] and two runners-up places [2013 and 2015].

The Philippines have an incredible record at the South East Asian Games, winning 18 of the 21 gold medals on offer between 1977 and 2022. However, the team were on the wrong side of an upset at the 2021 Games in Vietnam, where they had to settle for second place for the first time since 1989 after Indonesia beat them 85-81 in the decisive match.

The Filipino team made their Olympic debut in 1936, but the most recent of their seven appearances at the Games came in 1972. They competed at the World Cup on six occasions between 1954 and 2019, their best result of third place coming on their debut back in 1954.
