Team Overview

General
In 2018 Indonesia returned to the Asian Games men's basketball competition after an absence of 56 years. They previously appeared at three consecutive editions of the Games between 1954 and 1962, never ranking higher than fifth.

As hosts of the 2018 Games, the Indonesian team won one and lost two of their three group stage matches, which was enough to see them advance to the knockout rounds. They faced a tough task in the quarterfinals, however, and were beaten 98-63 by eventual gold medallists the People's Republic of China. After further defeats to the Syrian Arab Republic and Japan in the classification rounds, Indonesia placed eighth overall.

The team have participated at 18 editions of the Asia Cup since 1960, with a fourth-place finish in 1967 representing their best result at the tournament. Indonesia hosted the 2022 Asia Cup, where they missed out on a quarterfinal berth after a 108-58 defeat to the People's Republic of China in the play-off round.

Indonesia recorded a significant achievement at the 2021 South East Asian Games in Vietnam. They claimed their first South East Asian Games title with an 85-81 victory over the Philippines that saw them finish first in the round-robin competition. The Indonesians also became the first team other than the Philippines to win gold at the Games since 1989.
