Team Overview

General
The People's Republic of China are the reigning Asian Games champions. They have claimed gold eight times since making their debut in 1974 - four more than any other team at the Asian Games - and in 12 appearances the only time they did not finish on the podium was at the 2014 Games in Incheon. Their total of 11 medals is surpassed only by the Republic of Korea's 14.

At the 2018 Games, they defeated hosts Indonesia in the quarterfinals and overcame Chinese Taipei at the semifinal stage to set up a gold medal game with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Chinese team trailed the Iranians early on but outscored their opponents by 16 points in the second half to win 84-72 and claim gold. They defeated the Republic of Korea in the 2010 gold medal game, and also beat the Koreans in the final in 1978, 1994, and 1998.

The Chinese team's best results have come at continental level and, in addition to their Asian Games success, they have won 16 titles at the Asia Cup since 1975. However, they have only triumphed twice in the last seven editions of the tournament, with their most recent title coming in 2015. They lost 72-69 to Lebanon in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Asia Cup.

The People's Republic of China made their most recent appearance at the Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, where they finished 12th out of 12 teams. Their highest ranking at the Olympic Games is eighth, which they achieved in 1996, 2004, and 2008. The Chinese team placed 24th out of 32 teams as hosts of the 2019 World Cup.
