He took up race walking in order to get a sports scholarship. His parents disapproved of his sporting career, but he was encouraged to pursue the sport by his physical education teacher. "I had to take up the sport. My parents could not afford senior high education, and told me to stop at junior high. They also told me to get a job if I wanted to continue school. My parents were not supportive of my decision to compete in race walking, but I was persistent that it was the way for me to get a higher education." Additional Information

General
NAME ORIGIN
He was born Yap Kim Lung. His parents decided to change his name to Hendro when he was age four. "My real name is Yap Kim Lung, it's a Chinese name that I couldn't use. If I used it, I couldn't go to a public school at that time, so I had to use an Indonesian name. When I was little, [racial] discrimination was still high. But I had to go to a public school because of my financial situation. In 2018 I decided to be myself and went public with my birth name. Since 2019, I began registering myself as 'Hendro Yap' in every competition. I was born in Indonesia. My parents and grandparents were also born in Indonesia. I have been serving and carried the Indonesian flag [in athletics] since 2007." (RoTivi Media YouTube channel, 28 Apr 2023; cnnindonesia, 19 Jan 2022; Facebook profile, 08 Aug 2021)

OVERCOMING INJURY
Due to a torn ligament in his left leg, a doctor told him that he would risk acquiring an impairment if he competed at the 2013 South East Asian Games in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. He went on to win a gold medal at the Games. "At the time I just thought it would be my only chance to win a gold medal at the South East Asian Games. After I won gold in Myanmar, I couldn't sleep for three days because I was in severe pain. When I returned to Indonesia, a friend of mine helped me as he had worked as a doctor for the NBA in the United States of America. Another doctor even told me that I should have lost my ability to walk with such an injury. But eventually all doctors concluded that the collective muscle strength in both of my legs, including the thigh and hip, was what saved me from being impaired. They were all amazed." (RoTivi Media YouTube channel, 28 Apr 2023)

OCCUPATION
He has worked as a civil servant at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Indonesia. (RoTivi Media YouTube channel, 28 Apr 2023)

FURTHER EDUCATION
In 2017 he graduated with a master's degree in sports management from San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia [UCAM] in Spain. "I learned a lot in Spain. I mean I didn't realise that I literally had to study in order to train. I thought it was all about training, training, and training. It changed my perspective. I also learned that I was expendable, even with all the shiny medals that I had won. It humbled me. So, before returning to Indonesia, I made a promise that I would apologise to all officials, judges, referees, and everyone that I had yelled at during competitions."
