He began competing in sprint events in 2015. "I competed for the first time in class 12. In that race I came second and even though it was my first race, I felt upset that this other guy won. That's when I decided to do it seriously. It became a self-respect thing." (lifestyle, 20 Apr 2022; espn, 07 Apr 2022; indianexpress, 20 Sep 2021; eastmojo男子棍术, 28 Apr 2021)

He grew up playing football but frequent injuries made him switch to sprinting. "I was getting injured very often while playing football and my mum did not like it. My mum asked me to either switch to a different sport or quit entirely. When I was in class eight, I was already six feet tall. One of my brother's friends told me since I have a good build I should try athletics too, but I didn't pay too much attention to it at the time. Basically, I am a lazy guy. I wanted to compete in an event that would get over quickly. I wouldn't have thought about athletics if my elder brother Pradyuman hadn't pushed me to give a try in athletics as I was very quick behind the ball." Additional Information

General
ANIME INSPIRATION
He draws inspiration from Goku, a character from the Japanese anime series 'Dragon Ball'. "In the series, Goku is someone who keeps improving himself when he fights until he finally achieves 'ultra' [a special power]. I felt I have to be like Goku. So I have to step out on the field and be a brave guy. I used to love watching it back when I didn't have cable TV. Now with internet, I can watch it any time I want." (espn, 07 Apr 2022)

SPEECH IMPAIRMENT
He has a stammer, and faced bullying as a child. He says he uses the memory of this as motivation when competing. "I stammer a lot. I have been like this since childhood. Then everyone would tell me, 'Jaldi bol, jaldi bol' [talk fast]. Now, I run very fast and tell them, 'Jaldi chal, jaldi chal' [come fast]. It happened when I was just 11 years old when my school teacher called me a 'loser' and 'good for nothing' in front of my father and the entire class. He told my father, 'Your son won't be able to do anything in his life'. I can't forget those words spoken by my teacher. They resonate in my mind every time I race."
