Japan have competed in the women's team event at 11 of the 12 editions of the Asian Games to feature artistic gymnastics. The team have finished on the podium on each occasion they appeared at the tournament, winning a total of four silver medals and seven bronze medals.
Japan won their only Olympic medal in the women's team all-around event at Tokyo 1964, where they claimed bronze. They narrowly missed out on the podium at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, finishing 1.632 points behind the People's Republic of China in bronze, and were also ranked fourth at the Games in 1960 and 1968. They finished fifth as hosts of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The Japanese team won bronze at the world championships in 1962 and 1966, while their best results in recent years are fifth-place finishes in 2010 and 2015. They placed seventh at the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, England.
