NOC Overview
Following the uniting of the two Yemeni states that competed separately at the Asian Games in the 1980s, the modern Republic of Yemen first appeared at the Asian Games in 1990. The NOC has won two medals at the Games since then. Its first medal came in 2002 when taekwondo athlete Ahmed Akram took bronze in the men's 54kg class. Wushu athlete Naji Hussein Al Ashwal picked up Yemen's second medal by winning bronze in the men's 52kg division at the 2006 Games in Doha.
At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, the NOC's best result was achieved by Greco-Roman wrestler Mohammed Al Quhali, who finished equal fifth in the 87kg category after losing his bronze medal bout. Al Quhali was Yemen's highest finisher four years earlier at the 2014 Games, where he also finished equal fifth but in the 80kg division.
In Indonesia, Ali Khousrof became the first athlete to represent Yemen at four editions of the Asian Games when he took part in both judo and ju-jitsu. Yemen also boasted one of the youngest competitors of any nation in Indonesia in the form of 12-year-old table tennis player Ebrahim Abdulhakim Gubran, who took part in the men's singles and team events.
Also in 2018, three female athletes represented Yemen across two sports. 18-year-old swimmer Nooran Ba Matraf finished ranked 15th in both the 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley events, while athletics competitors Hanin Thabit [27th in 200m, 16th in 400m] and Entasar Al-Madhfari [19th, 1500m] also took part. Thabit became the first Yemeni woman to compete at two editions of the Games in Indonesia, having finished ranked 15th in the 800m at Incheon in 2014.
