Syrian Arab Republic - Profile
NOC Overview
The Syrian Arab Republic made its Asian Games debut in 1978, and weightlifter Talal Nagar won the NOC's first medal that year when he claimed gold in the men's 110kg category. Four years later Nagar triumphed again after moving up to the +110kg division, and he remains the only Syrian to have won multiple gold medals at the Games.
Male swimmer Hisham Masr has won the most medals of any colour for the NOC with three. He claimed gold in the 1500m freestyle and silver in the 400m freestyle at the 1994 Games in Hiroshima, the only occasion a Syrian athlete has won more than one medal at a single edition of the Games, followed by bronze in the 1500m freestyle in 1998. Only one female Syrian athlete has claimed an Asian Games medal - Ghada Shouaa, who won gold in the women's heptathlon in 1994.
After the Syrian Arab Republic failed to win a single medal in Incheon in 2014, the NOC returned to the podium in 2018 when Majd Eddin Ghazal claimed bronze in the men's high jump, the only Syrian medal won in Indonesia. Other notable results for Syrian athletes in 2018 include the men's football and basketball teams, who were both knocked out at the quarterfinals stage. In individual events, Mohamad Maso finished sixth in the men's triathlon, while women's competitor Hasna Saied took part in two sports - kurash [63kg] and sambo [68kg] - in Indonesia.
