Sri Lanka - Profile
NOC Overview
Sri Lanka is one of only seven NOCs to have competed in every edition of the Asian Games. It competed as Ceylon between 1951 and 1970.
Athletics has been integral to Sri Lanka's success at the Asian Games, accounting for over half of the NOC's total medal count. With four medals each, athletics competitors Damayanthi Darsha, Susanthika Jayasinghe and Lucien Rosa are Sri Lanka's most decorated athletes. Darsha, however, is the only one to boast three gold medals, having triumphed in both the women's 200m and 400m in 1998 before defending her 400m title at the 2002 Games. Rosa won gold in the men's 5000m and 10,000m in 1970, while Jayasinghe triumphed in the women's 100m at the 2002 Games in Busan.
Cricket is the only other sport in which Sri Lanka has won gold at the Asian Games, with the NOC claiming victory in the men's tournament in 2014 after defeating Afghanistan by 68 runs in the final. Sri Lanka's only other medal in Incheon also came in cricket, with the women's team beating the People's Republic of China in the bronze medal match.
At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, Sri Lanka was one of nine NOCs to end the Games without a medal. Fourth-place finishes for the men's 4x100m relay team and the men's rugby sevens team were Sri Lanka's best performances in Indonesia, with the rugby sevens team losing to Republic of Korea in the bronze medal match.
Among Sri Lanka's best individual performances in Indonesia were men's 60kg wushu competitor Pethum Nuwan Balawardhana and women's 49kg taekwondoka Herathpura Dewage Kumudu, who were both knocked out at the quarterfinals stage of their events, while swimmer Matthew Abeysinghe [men's 100m freestyle] and athletics competitor Gayanthika Artigala [women's 800m] both finished sixth in their events.
