Saudi Arabia - Profile
NOC Overview
Saudi Arabia has been represented by athletes at all but one Asian Games since 1978. Athletics has been by far the NOC's most profitable sport at the Games, providing nearly half of its medals, followed by equestrian jumping. All of the NOC's medals have been won by men.
Shooter Saied Almutairi won Saudi Arabia's first Asian Games gold medal by claiming victory in the men's skeet event at the 1994 Games in Hiroshima. Between 2002 and 2018, Saudi Arabian athletics competitors won 17 gold medals, including three each for Hamdan Odha Al Bishi, Hamed Al Bishi, Mohammed Al-Salhi [all sprinters], and Sultan Abdulmajeed Al-Hebshi [shot put]. Equestrian jumper Abdullah Alsharbatly is the only Saudi Arabian with four Asian Games gold medals. Alsharbatly secured individual gold in 2014 in Incheon, and team gold in 2006, 2010 and 2018.
Saudi Arabia's only gold medal at the 2018 Games in Indonesia was its triumph in the equestrian jumping team competition. Its six total medals at the 2018 Games was its lowest tally at a single edition since 1990. Also in Indonesia, the NOC sent its first female athletes to compete at an Asian Games. Seven Saudi women took part in four sports in Indonesia [athletics, badminton, ju-jitsu and taekwondo], but none came close a podium finish.
