NOC Overview
Afghanistan appeared at the first Asian Games in 1951 and has been represented at all but four editions since then. Athletes representing Afghanistan are yet to win a gold medal at the Asian Games, with silver medals in cricket, freestyle wrestling, and taekwondo among the NOC's best results.
Taekwondo athlete Nesar Bahawi became the first Afghan to win multiple Asian Games medals when he claimed silver in the men's 80kg category at the 2010 Games. He also won bronze in the 74kg category at the 2006 Games in Doha. Roia Zamani, who won Afghanistan's first Asian Games taekwondo medal in 2002 with bronze in the 73kg category, is the only female medallist for Afghanistan at the Games.
In team sports, the NOC has achieved its best results in cricket, securing consecutive silver medals in 2010 and 2014. Afghanistan's most successful edition of the Games in terms of medals was in 2010 in Guangzhou, where taekwondo athlete Mohammad Jawad Lakzaee added a bronze to the silvers won by Bahawi and the men's cricket team.
The 2018 Games in Indonesia saw Afghanistan claim two medals. Mohd Khaled Hotak won bronze in wushu in the men's 65kg category, while kurash athlete Mansour Sarwari secured bronze in the men's +90kg event.
